Maria "Carbone" Baxter, born May 19, 1946 passed away peacefully Sunday morning September 30, at Woodlawn Compassionate Care Unit she was 72 years young, from a long battle with cancer.
Maria was born in Montello, Italy and came to America in 1955--no speaka the English, but later was bi lingual in both. -She came with her parents Salvatore and Rosina (deceased), and siblings, Luca, Antoinette, and Angela. When she left Italy, she asked her cousins "how will I know when I'm in America" their response was when you see the lady in the water (Statue of Liberty). Once here, they made their way to make cheese in East Canton at her Nono Roberto's cheese factory. She eventually moved to Canton with parents and siblings and went to McKinley High and cosmetology school. Maria did hair for years while she raised her three sons and her siblings, she spent her entire life taking care of someone and also worked as a waitress at some of the finest establishments in Canton, Ohio. She loved working at Brookside Country Club the best-where she worked and catered to the members for over forty years off and on either catering or managing the Men's grill which was her life (besides her sons) she catered to each and every man that came in to the room from peeling their apples to making their special Maria salad which was a chef's nightmare. She was the ambassador to Brookside each and every time a special person was out there from Sara Palin to President Bush, Maria was introduced to them by Mr. Timken. She served Brookside, especially the men in The Men's Grill with all her heart and soul.
During that time, she married Gerry Baxter known to most of you as "Baxter" had three sons Michael Dennis, Gerald and the love of her Life, Luca Baxter.
She was a member of the Italian American Club.
She loved her quiet time after a long day at work by going to Encore and TJ Maxx that was her restful time.
She loved entertaining people, celebrating the achievements of others and going to Italy each year, especially the last visit there when she was given a first-class ticket by a special person. Many happy memories were made at Sylvester's and 91. Maria loved her family, friends and dedicated her life to being the best mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, friend to everyone she encountered.
She is preceded in death by her parents Salvatore & Rosina Carbone, her in-laws Mr. and Mrs. Baxter, her brothers Luca, Anthony, Angelo, her sister Antoinette, her son Luca and step-son, Tom Baxter.
She leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Gerry Baxter and her sons, Michael (Kim) of Columbus, Gerald Baxter, Kelly Baxter (daughter-in-law), her sister,
Angela (John) Cetorelli of Canton, Michella (Keith) Davidson, Mario, Salvatore (Mary Ann) Carbone all of California; her grandchildren, Corbin (Lana Lea), Jacqueline (who looks just like her when she was young), Dennis of Columbus, Samantha (Michael) Thompson and Sofia and Luca Baxter, aunts and uncles in Italy. Many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Her spirit touched the lives of countless people and she will be remembered for her loving kindness, ability to empathize, selflessness and generosity. Maria leaves behind an amazing legacy, it seemed as if you could never go anywhere with her without her knowing everyone everywhere in Canton, Ohio.
A celebration of life will be Sunday Oct. 21, 2018 at La Pizzaria 3656 Dressler Road N.W. Canton, Ohio from 2:00pm.tilI 6:00 pm.
