Alvin Dean VanFossen, age 93, passed away September 6, 2018. He was born November 21, 1924 in Smyrna, Ohio, son to the late Marion L. VanFossen and Bessie (Tharp) VanFossen. Alvin proudly served in the United States Marines and is one of the last few living members of the USS Cape Gloucester. He retired from the Timken Company following 30 years of employment. He was a member of Center Church of the Brethren, member of the East Sparta VFW, earned his private pilots license at the age of 60 and loved planes, and was an avid bowler and Cleveland Indians fan. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Mary Lou VanFossen; great grandson, Steven Del Johanson and numerous siblings. Survivors include four children, Denise VanFossen of Florida, Ron (Sandy) VanFossen of Florida, Steve VanFossen of Canton, and Mike (Stephanie) VanFossen of Perry Twp; and many loving grandchildren; great grandchildren; and nieces, nephews and siblings. Funeral will be held Saturday at 11:00am in Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel with Pastor Bill Wayt officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at 2pm in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Guernsey County. Calling hours will be held Friday evening from 5-8pm as well as one hour prior to the service.
