Betty Jane Shive, age 94, passed away on May 16, 2018, as a resident of the Canton Christian Home. She was born October 2, 1923 to Herman and Nelle Blake in Columbus, OH, but lived almost her entire life in the Canton area, the last fifty in Jackson Twp.
A 1940 graduate of McKinley High School, she attended Ohio University and Canton Actual Business College and then opened the War Bond Dept. for the Timken Co. in 1942. While working there she continued her education until becoming a teacher in Canton City Schools. She graduated from Kent State University, did her graduate study at the University of Akron, retiring from teaching after 31 years in 1981. Teaching and working with her students was such a rewarding experience for her and she felt greatly honored to receive the Martha Holden Jennings Award for Outstanding Teacher in 1970.
During the earlier years of her family life and with the wonderful addition of a son, she wanted also to make a contribution to her community. She served as president of Canton Junior Sorosis and Canton Jr. Civic Club. She was a member of the Mayor's Committee for Good Reading. She served as Residential Chairman for the United Fund, she served on the boards of several local health organizations as well as various United Way projects. For this she received the United Way's Golden Key Award in 1961.
But always there was her love for the Lord and His church, First Christian. She began at an early age, teaching in the children's and young people's departments, working in the church's various missionary activities and after teaching 50 years to the Deborah/Christian Women's class, at the age of 92 she ended the position and very special time with her dear Christian Women. To be honored by the Elders of the Church as a recipient of God's Faithful Servant Award in 2000, was her most humbling recognition. God had indeed been so generous to her.
Preceded in death by her husband, George R. Shive, Jr., in Dec. 2001, she knew she had lost the one who, so faithfully, had shared in all her endeavors through the years. She is survived by her beloved son, Lenn and daughter-in-law Susan, her very precious grandchildren Jared (Heather) Shive and Erin (Matthew) Campanale and she felt truly blessed with the coming of her great-grandchildren, Vinny and Nico Campanale and Roselyn Shive.
Graveside Services will be held 10:00AM Monday at Forest Hill Cemetery (4414 Cleveland Ave NW). A Celebration of Betty's Life will be held at 12:00PM Monday at the Canton Christian Home (2550 Cleveland Ave NW) with Chaplain Bill Moody officiating.
Memorial gifts may be made to First Christian Church or the Canton Christian Church. The Shive family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Mercy Hospital's ICU and Hospice Units for the wonderful compassionate care given to Betty.
