Cremation is the process of the disposition of a dead body by fire. The body is placed into a combustible container (alternative container), and then put into a chamber that is called a retort. The body is reduced to bone fragments by a process of intense heat, pressure and pulverizing. The end result is referred to as cremated remains, ashes, or sometimes, cremains.
Embalming of the body is not necessary for cremation. However, if there is to be public viewing and services before cremation, embalming is usually required for the health and protection of funeral home employees and the people who attend the service.
Visitation (calling hours) and funeral services may be held before cremation takes place. For this purpose, rental caskets and cremation caskets are available. A cremation casket is made of flamable materials so that the fire consumes the entire casket.
Cremated remains may be buried on a cemetery lot, placed into a columbarium or niche, kept by the family in an urn, distributed to family members in companion urns or keepsake jewelry, or scattered over the ground or water. There are many options to consider when choosing cremation.
Cremation is a very personal choice. You must determine what form of preparation for final disposition you desire. Whether you choose earth burial, entombment or cremation, it is wise to consider the emotional needs of those that you leave behind. By including your family and loved ones in your decisions, you may avoid the possibility of added stress during a very emotional time for your survivors.
There are three basic cremation options:
Traditional Funeral - visitation and a funeral service held either at the funeral home or at church. Cremation will take place following the funeral service.
Memorial Service - a service held after cremation has occurred. This is a gathering of family and friends to celebrate the life of a loved one, and can be held at the funeral home, church or other special site.
Direct Cremation - there are NO services or visitation. The body is cremated as soon as possible and the ashes returned to the family.
