Family Support Services of the Reed Funeral Home maintains an extensive Lending Library of the most current resources on LOSS AND GRIEF. In grief, it is natural to want to seek information so we can better understand what is happening in our lives or the lives of those we are supporting, following the death of a loved one. It is through knowledge and understanding that we gain a sense of control in our lives.

I KNOW I MADE IT HAPPEN      Lynn Bennett Blackburn
"I made it happen" thoughts can be hidden for years and may be a child's response to why things happen. This is an excellent book for parents and children who are living with feelings of guilt associated with important life events, such as death, divorce, injury or illness.

This story could be used to help prepare children for future events as grandparents age, or to encourage conversations after the death of a grandparent.

WHERE THE BALLOONS GO      Paul Coleman

PET DEATH



WHEN A PET DIES      Fred Rogers
Mr. Rogers has developed a series of "First Experience Books" that opens communication with young children. "When a Pet Dies" helps our children face death of a pet in early childhood and ultimately may influence the way they cope with many of life's situations all their lives. Encourages children to talk openly about their feelings and can be an important step toward managing their feelings.

THE TENTH GOOD THING ABOUT BARNEY      Judith Viorst
A wonderful book to explain the importance of remembering and saying good bye when a pet dies.

I'LL ALWAYS LOVE YOU      Hans Wilhelm
The death of a special pet is a loss that is felt very deeply. Wilhelm's sweet message is an important one for children (as well as adults) in helping us grieve the death of our pet.

FINDING YOUR WAY AFTER YOUR SPOUSE DIES      Marta Felber
Support and encouragement from a widow who offers scripture, personal reflections and prayer for those whose spouse has died. She combines her counseling skills with her personal grief journey to provide hope for the journey ahead.

TAKING THE TRIP      Romaine Presnell
This is a widow's journal expressing the pain as well as hope for the journey through grief following the death of a spouse.

This book is especially helpful for the younger widow. The author writes from her personal experiences following the death of her husband.

INTO THE CAVE      Dr. Ron Petrie

A LOOK INTO THE MIRROR      Ed Ames
A Handbook for Widowers: covers single parenting issues, finances, living alone and what to do with her things. The author writes this book as a road-map for the journey through grief, helping you feel less alone in your grief.

COWBELLS AND COURAGE      Pat Page
Essentials for all men. This book is written by a widower whose wife died after almost fifty years of marriage. He talks to men about everything experiences in his journey through grief (from cooking to dating, anger and even sex).

BEING A WIDOW      Lynn Caine
A compassionate, practical guide: a self-help guide for women facing the loneliness and stress of widowhood. It is a good beginning for the road to recovery.

THE FALL OF THE SPARROW      Kent L. Kappelman
This book is highly recommended. It is the story of a father's search for meaning in the sudden death of his son. The author looks directly at sudden loss, grieving and the struggle to survive that loss. He shows us that even in the lowest periods of sorrow there are healing choices, things that we can do to gain control and to value the uniqueness of the life of the lost child.

WHEN BAD THINGS HAPPEN TO GOOD PEOPLE      Harold Kushner
When a child dies, a parent's world is shattered. Harold Kushner shares his experiences and his insight for the grieving following the death of his son at the age of 14.

Or even starts talking about it: This book is written to help you understand what you are feeling and to help you heal after a friend has committed suicide. This is an excellent book of hope for survivors (family and friends) of loved ones who complete the act of suicide. It takes you through the journey of a parent following the death of her son. She gives guidelines to help others for the first days, the funeral, the first year and especially the special days when grief is so painful.

The author tells her personal story of her son's suicide. She tells the story of devastating tragedy and triumph, giving parents comfort and understanding in this compassionate book.
